Why do orchestras tune to the oboe? In most orchestras the principal oboe plays the A, because its tone cuts through and its pitch stays steady. That A is usually set near 440 vibrations per second, a standard known as concert pitch. Many orchestras tune a little higher, and groups playing Baroque music on period instruments often tune lower, near 415. Next time you hear the tuning note before a concert, you will know who is giving it and why. Comment any classical question you've always wondere
